A custom built-in shelf unit set into a niche in a private apartment in Kreuzberg, Berlin. A floor-to-ceiling closed cabinet on the right is combined with open, floating shelves on the left. Made from lacquered MDF, the shelves are quite thick, giving the piece a rather bold outline. The most considered decision was the colour. Lacquered in Farrow & Ball Romesco, a deep scarlet red, the shelf inevitably becomes the room's focal point. To keep the shelves from overwhelming the books and objects on display, the floating construction was chosen, preserving enough visual white space for the colour and the contents to coexist.
